The Wolf and the Lamb Plate, 1900

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 6
Identifier: CFC2019.0039.1.4
Abstract Ms Reese guesses a date in the late 1800's or early 1900's for these lovely plates. She describes the piece as a vintage porcelain/ceramic plate measuring about 8¼" in diameter. There is a painted pink rim with an embossed floral design. In each plate's center is a fine colored depiction of a fable scene. Lovely hues -- maroon, tan, yellow, blue, flesh, and green -- color the scenes nicely. The fable texts are arranged in unusual fashion. They are divided into sections and appear at...

The Wolf and the Lamb Proverb Card, 1930

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0025
Abstract

In style, this card seems like Liebig cards. Scrollwork on the upper left and far right reveals two different scenes of bullying by the stronger. Apparently the boy is making off with the girl's lunch. The verso features the text of La Fontaine's WL.

Tissage Imagé, Woven Paper Puzzle, 1900

Item — Box: CFC Puzzles Box 3
Identifier: CFC2020.0148.1.1
Abstract About six months ago, I catalogued an extraordinary and delicate single piece presenting TH found by Bertrand Cocq, a woven paper picture puzzle formed by weaving twelve strips of paper through a perforated sheet to create a picture. Now six months later, I discover that I had a set of eight of them that I had purchased sometime earlier – who knows where and for how much? – beautifully boxed and called “Tissage Imagé.” I have left the overhanging paper strips on FG so that you can sense...

TMCM Red-Colored Photographic French 1904, 1904

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0028.1-5
Abstract

I never want to disagree with Monsieur Cocq, but I wonder if there is not a missing fourth card in a series of six. This set quotes La Fontane but, at that point, excises a few lines of his text. Is there an extra card out there somewhere, to complete this series? As it is, this photographic series presents a strong contrast between the luxuriously dressed city rat and the simpler country rat in her plain red dress.

Tortoise and Hare Hidden Picture Card, 1920

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0041.1

Even the verso gives no help here. The card quotes the first two lines of La Fontaine's TH in French and then asks where the hare is.

Tortoise and Two Geese, Set of 3 Blue Buttons, bulk: 1960 - 1969

Item — Box: CFC Artifact Box 5
Identifier: CFC2021.0204.1
Abstract The surprise with these button cards is that the fable illustration – clearly taken from one of La Fontaine's most beloved fables in each case – has nothing perceptible to do with the buttons! The fable is never named. The verso provides either the lot number, always beginning with "975-22" but then varying for two further digits, or these lot numbers plus a short promotion of the buttons in French and English. While cataloguing these seven cards received from Moriceau Esméralda, I found...

Good color work! Lorioux is always fun. The figure of La Fontaine on the verso is puzzling.

Town Mouse and Country Mouse Paper Scenes to Cut Out and Mount, 1948

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0061.1
Abstract Apparently three of seven sheets that came in a booklet "J'apprends les Fables de La Fontaine en m'amusant" published by Editions Brunier in 1948. About five elements have tabs that one places through slots in the elliptical base to make the fable scene. A text of the fable and instructions for the scene are on the front of each broadside. Lovely coloring! I am not sure that the cardstock is quite firm enough to handle young fingers manipulating the tabs. The nearby farmer in FS and the...

Twenty-nine French matchboxes, 1950

File — Box: CFC Matchboxes Box 2
Identifier: CFC2019.0125.1
Abstract

This almost-complete set, missing only "Les Deux Pigeons," replicates the full set of covers in both sets of SEITA illustrations, minus the two larger covers apparently used for packages of ten. Their images are thus the same as that set.

Two Service de Poupee Plates, 1925

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 4
Identifier: CFC2019.0034.1
Abstract I was and am sure that there must be a number of such sets around France, and so I was delighted to find these two little dishes on Ebay. Their paint-work is very attractive. Particularly well done is the stance of the fox with one paw on the vase he cannot penetrate for its food, while the stork does so easily. The two-color approach, which works effectively here, means that the cheese in the crow's mouth is green! Both plates seem to have a registry mark of "Z" inprinted in their backs,...

V. Spahn, Nos. 7, 15, and 17, 1950?

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0039.1-3
Abstract The text of the fable takes up most of the message-space on the verso of the cards. Under the picture is "Fables de la Fontaine" in Italics at he lower left and a block-print title at the lower right. The modes of translating the fables into children's life are fascinating here. The emphasis is not on simple "cuteness." The children can play the fable straight, as in "L'Huitre et les Plaideurs" and GGE. FC is thus about one child stealing a ball while another sits up a tree and watches his...

Vernicire, Set of 44, 1920

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0058.1-44
Abstract

These cards are unusual in having mostly print on the "image" side of the card. There is a full text of La Fontaine's fable on each verso. The verso of several is crudely cut. The cards are arranged in French alphabetical order.

Vieillemard/Chocolat Guérin-Boutron/Chocolat Louit, 1887

Item — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0010.1-16
Abstract Excellent and witty art. Often an animal story is rendered in a human scene, as in FG (a thin man walks away from a butcher shop), DW (a bum walks with a dog-leading burgher), 2P (a rich man throws money, while a poor man has to dig into his pocket for it), and TH (a legless beggar beats a legged one!). The art seems heavily dependent on Grandville (note the face of the bumpkin in "The Cock and the Pearl"), with perhaps some influence from Doré. 68 cards, of which ten feature fables of...
